Zombie Ballet “A Sweet Sorrow”

PERFORMANCE: Leigh Purtill presents Zombie Ballet: Leigh Purtill is a ballet instructor, choreographer and coach in the Los Angeles area.  She is also a published novelist with a Master’s degree in Film Production from Boston University.

Zombies are Leigh’s passion so it was only natural that she would try to put “ballet” and “the undead” together. She has been developing a full-length story ballet called “Sweet Sorrow” that is a sequel to Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet and takes place after the main characters die. “Zombie ballet” is a brief glimpse into that ballet. All of Leigh’s dancers are her students and they all share the same love of zombies and unconventional approach to ballet.

Ripley was passionate about bringing the WEIRD and UNUSUAL to those that could not come to it, so he traveled the world, collecting Curioddities to share.This year, Ripley’s celebrates 98 years of proudly freaking out families, continuing that Legacy. We are honored to present four ICONS of the Ripley’s heritage only at ScareLA this summer: a genuine shrunken human head, a two-headed, three-footed bird, a “genuine” vampire killing kit and more!

BEST OF ALL: Meet George the Giant! 7’2” sword swallower George the Giant is the Hollywood Odditorium’s ICON; the stunt performer has become famous for stomach-churning performances, such as hammering nails into his face, swinging puppies from fish hooks in his eyes, and sword swallowing!

Sit around the fire and take a flight of the imagination with our hosts and even witness real documented evidence of paranormal activity. Other surprises will be revealed in the dark so tread carefully and enter the haunted woods at your own risk…

This 30-minute demonstration covers materials, techniques, and methods to airbrush actors for multiple characters quickly.

Ken Franklin has been a special effects makeup artist for over 20 years. He has held makeup department head positions at several northern California haunted events and trained makeup teams across the country.  Ken and his wife Bernice run an effects makeup business – FaceFX (facefxmakeup.com) which specializes in providing airbrush equipment and supplies as well as contract makeup services to events, video, and Film. Ken has authored articles on makeup application and efficient makeup room management in magazines such as Hauntworld and Airbrush Techniques. Ken’s resume as a makeup artist also  includes several award winning independent shorts as well as the Troma’s feature, Poultrygeist.

Strap on pads, gloves, sliding shoes and join in on the Halloween craze that is sliding! Taught by a few members of the brigade we welcome anyone from the seasoned slider wanting to learn some new skills and tricks to beginners. The Decayed Brigade will not provide any equipment for anyone wishing to be involved in the clinic, and students are encouraged to bring their own; student equipment will be inspected by a member of the decayed brigade before use. Pads with sliding wax will not be permitted. This clinic will be the only opportunity for Scare LA attendees to slide during the attention and Decayed Brigade reserved the right to remove anyone from the clinic they deem unsafe.

The Anticipation of Fear examines examples from multiple horror venues and discusses how they use music, viewing angles, and lighting to fuel tense memorable moments. This class will give students a better understanding of how the scare is only as impactful as the set up for it. Composer, sound designer, and creative director Marc Straight has been a part of the horror industry for over half of his life. Initially working as an actor in haunted attractions, he used his love of horror and passion for music to create dark symphonies with disturbing ambient designs. He has also pushed his limits in the world of video games. Working as a creative designer on seven titles, 6 of which lay close to the horror genre, he seeks to study and apply the driving forces of fear. Hailing from the zombie capital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Marc strives to represent his hometown of horror and be a part of the evolution of all things scary.

However, some experts believe VR is a controversial format for fright blurring the line of real and unreal and causing lasting psychological effects. BRINGING YOUR HAUNT TO LIFE WITH ANIMATRONICS

SEMINAR: by Steve Koci

This presentation will introduce you to the wonderful world of animatronics with actual prop examples as well as video. We’ll discuss the different methods of adding movement to your props and cover some of the ways to control them. Included in the discussion will be various 12V and 110V motors, servos and pneumatics as well as some others types that you may not have considered. We’ll cover the basics but will provide plenty of info for the more advanced haunter as well.But beware, once you give your props the ability to come alive, there’s no going back! Learning Objectives: Participants will leave the course with a basic understanding of the various methods available to animate a Halloween prop. They will know where to purchase the materials necessary to build their projects and the cost differences between the many alternatives. Attendees will receive information on resources available to further their education in the subject of constructing moving props.

Steve Koci, who goes by the name of ‘Halstaff’ on the forums and YouTube, is an avid home haunter who also writes for Nuts and Volts and Servo magazines. For over a year, he has written a column in “Servo Magazine” on “Do It Yourself Animatronics.” Koci participates in several different Make and Take groups where he frequently leads the builds and is a moderator at Haunt Forum and Garage of Evil. He has shared his knowledge by teaching at various Haunt Conventions including Transworld, Scare LA, and HauntX. He and his wife began haunting seven years ago and put on the haunt Sanctuary of Spooks in San Diego, which is entirely staffed by animatronics. They’ve built and costumed all the props and focus on a “Spooky” theme without blood and gore. They employed over 45 animatronics and projections in their haunt last year and had plans to add more in the coming year. In addition to building all of the props, he also designs and builds most of the controllers that operate the haunt.

SECOND STAGE : Only at ScareLA. Margee Kerr is a sociologist who studies fear as she travels the world in search of scare-adventures. She has been conducting a scare study in the basement of the most infamous interactive extreme haunt in Pittsburgh, The Scarehouse Basement. Margee will share the most fascinating discoveries and insights she has uncovered while writing her book “SCREAM: Chilling Adventures in the Science of Fear,” named as a must read by the Washington Post.


Margee’s work has been featured in the New York Times, Good Morning America, Parade, Atlantic Monthly, and NPR’s Science Friday. You may have seen her on the National Geographic channel in Map of Hell, A&E‘s Buried Alive, and the History Channel‘s True Monsters.  Signed copies of her book will be available for purchase on the ScareLA showfloor.

The Sound of Fear is a focused study in the evolution of sound in film and video games for the horror genre. The class covers in-depth how to use music and sound design to create realism and fear.

Marc Straight is a 26 year old composer from Pittsburgh, PA, that found his love of music very early on in life. At the age of four, he was already learning to play the piano. This would later evolve into the ability to play ten additional instruments; including the guitar, violin and various woodwinds. After high school, Marc went on to study at the Musician’s Institute in California; where he dedicated time and practice into learning how to compose his own music. To date, Marc has worked on various musical projects for himself and others. He currently has released two albums, titled “Create Your Path” and “Garden of Autumn”, as well as creating music and sound effects for games and film. Currently, he is the lead composer and producer behind Tien’s Nightmare; an indie game featuring a spirit named Tien, who must fight off nightmarish creations and restore order to the dream world.

David Schoelen (Founder of Reel Guise Cosplay) has been a horror aficionado since childhood when he would start building sets in June for the front porch of his family’s Halloween. Raised on Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Kruger – dark imagination and creativity were familiar. David took that passion for horror and all things nerdy and founded Reel Guise Cosplay in 2013, the nation’s largest, most screen accurate The Walking Dead cosplay troupe. In their brief time together, Reel Guise has been recognized by placing or winning seven cosplay competitions and has appeared in both local and national media.

Taught by a few members of the brigade we welcome anyone from the seasoned slider wanting to learn some new skills and tricks to beginners. The Decayed Brigade will not provide any equipment for anyone wishing to be involved in the clinic, and students are encouraged to bring their own; student equipment will be inspected by a member of the decayed brigade before use. Pads with sliding wax will not be permitted. This clinic will be the only opportunity for Scare LA attendees to slide during the attention and Decayed Brigade reserved the right to remove anyone from the clinic they deem unsafe.

The Decayed Brigade are an elite sliding team consisting of the best sliders from different haunted attractions across Southern California. Formed in 2013, these guys and gals have taken sliding beyond the use of a scare tactic, creating a spectacular demonstration of skill and talent. The Magic of Transforming Foam Into Copper

Join Melissa “Hauntzilla” Winton of Nightmares & Dreamscapes in this make-and-take workshop, where attendees will learn the art of faux finish. Melissa will take attendees through the process of transforming everyday pink installation foam into creepy, corroded turn-of-the-century copper statue to hang on a wall, using inexpensive and easily accessible materials that can also be applied to other similar applications. Afterward, attendees will take with them their very own antique copper creation commemorating the convention and the techniques learned.

Melissa “Hauntzilla” Winton owned and operated the charity home haunts ‘Terror on the Hill’ and ‘The Dead Zone’ in Frisco, TX for four years, where she was in charge of set design, prop creation, among other roles. Nightmares & Dreamscapes, Melissa’s production company, produces sets for haunted attractions across the country. Beyond her substantial art background, she is also a published author for the psychological horror short stories genre. Acting as co-owner of Haunt Shirts LLC, Melissa provides original designs and acts as a print service for haunted attractions and vendors.

I will discuss the process my wife and I went through to streamline our makeup department so that we could control quality and get out of the critical path for our haunt’s production schedule.  I will discuss our solution and how it involved equipment and procedure decisions that are easily scalable to any size haunt.

Ken Franklin has been a special effects makeup artist for over 20 years. He has held makeup department head positions at several northern California haunted events and trained makeup teams across the country.  Ken and his wife Bernice run an effects makeup business – FaceFX (facefxmakeup.com) which specializes in providing airbrush equipment and supplies as well as contract makeup services to events, video, and Film. Ken has authored articles on makeup application and efficient makeup room management in magazines such as Hauntworld and Airbrush Techniques. Ken’s resume as a makeup artist also  includes several award winning independent shorts as well as the Troma’s feature, Poultrygeist.

This spans from blood rigs to beauty makeup, and every kind of prosthetic appliance in-between. He has provided many of the iconic looks for shock rock musicians such as Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Alice Cooper, as well as pop stars like N’Sync, Missy Elliot, Puff Daddy, and more. Ronnie James Dio wouldn’t work on a movie without Ralis by his side as his personal makeup artist. Ralis regularly works with directors Dean Karr and P. R. A basic talk on making and understanding Pneumatic systems for Haunts. This class will demonstrate what you need to know about air driven props for Home Haunts, Pro Haunts, or Yard Displays. We go over various cylinders, solenoids, air compressors and hook-ups for a typical haunt pneumatic layout. You will leave with a basic knowledge of pneumatics and enough understanding of the various parts to feel comfortable working with and buying pneumatic components.

Preston Meyer is from Rotten Apple 907, a home haunt which started off as child’s birthday party and has grown to become an experience that people look forward to attending each year. Now it is designed and built by all the members of the Meyer family as well as a terrific group of individuals who volunteer their time and building and acting skills. Over the years, the group has dedicated a lot of time and effort to learning how to make our haunt even better, going from a yard display to full home haunt. As a result, each year’s house is more detailed and exciting, and the number of people attending our Haunted House increases. In 2015 we welcomed over 3000 people through the doors of our Haunted House, and we look forward to welcoming much more. This class will discuss sliding on three different levels: equipment/safety, practicality, and showmanship. We will go over each topic, providing vital information and secret tricks/tips that we have learned and developed throughout the years so that anyone interested in learning how to slide or further advancing their skills can benefit from it.

The Decayed Brigade are an elite sliding team consisting of the best sliders from different haunted attractions across Southern California. Formed in 2013, these guys and gals have taken sliding beyond the use of a scare tactic, creating a spectacular demonstration of skill and talent. As an effects artist, he foam-fabricated Roger Corman’s CARNOSAUR, the octopus prop for Tim Burton’s ED WOOD, and “Senor Donut” for SEX DRIVE. He is the founder and president of Total Fabrication, a company that has been creating characters, creatures, specialty costumes, puppets, and props for the last 20 years. He received an Emmy nomination for costume design the Nickelodeon show “Yo Gabba Gabba.”

Mr. Neill, a veteran of Visual Effects and Make-up from Star Trek to GhostBusters will take you through a journey which will include life masks, sculpting, mold making, producing a prosthetic or mask from latex/foam rubber and even silicone. He will also show you how the make-up is applied and cover mask making.

Steve Neill is a special effects makeup artist, filmmaker, puppeteer, model maker and visual effects (VFX) artist in film and television with a career spanning over 35 years. Steve’s plethora of credits include Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Crater Lake Monster (1977), Laser Blast (1978), Ghost Busters (1984), Fright Night (1985), and many other sci-fi/horror films. Steve created, wrote, and produced The Day Time Ended (1978). Steve Neill is currently in production at SNG Studio for “But Something is There” produced by Steve Neill, Paul Gentry, Whitley Strieber and Mary Cacciapaglia. SNG Studio also has an apprenticeship program where Steve is mentoring the next generation of movie-making artist and giving back to an Industry he loves. Steve Neill continues to work in the industry and owns SNG Studio in Ventura, California just 45 minutes North of Los Angeles.

You have established a fan base and are ready to “take it to the next level.” Let’s move from a ‘Halloween Display’ to more of a ‘Haunted House Walk-Through Experience,’ complete with thrills, chills, and scares. Don’t waste your hard work; instead, spend the time to craft the experience, time your scares, and give them something to scream about! In this lively session, Roger Hayes will explain how to use fear creatively to move the guests where you want them in the haunt. Attendees will learn how to design their haunt with an artist’s eye. Learn what to expect when dealing with local city officials and Fire Marshals. Learn how to haunt safely, entertain, and bring them back for more.

Roger Hayes is the creator and driving force behind Hayes Haunt, recipient of the Home Haunter award in 2011 for a Vanguard level walk through haunt. He is also the author of the how-to book “Home Haunting for Mere Mortals”. Roger has a degree in Physics with an emphasis in Computer Science and Engineering, but his first love is art. He works in many mediums including stained glass, painting, and sculpting. Combined with his love of Halloween and attraction to all things dark or quirky, creating Haunted houses became a natural pathway. Unable to quell his twisted imagination he continues to birth creepy works of art and haunted house ideas.

Beyond her substantial art background, she is also a published author for the psychological horror short stories genre.
