We have prepared over 40 hours of special presentations, celebrity panels, costume contests and exclusive performances and shows just to scare you out of your mind this summer! Featured presenters come from film, TV, the theme park industry, haunt professionals, entertainers and more. Below are just a few highlights to wet your bloodthirsty appetites. We don’t want to overwhelm you with awesome so we will be announcing our freakishly amazing programming bit by bit.     A Scare Student level pass is required to register for any of our workshops, make and takes or education tracks. All material fees are included in the price of this all-you-can-learn ticket!

What happens next is anyone’s guess.”  At ScareLA mysterious representatives of the OOA Institute explain why complete submission and indoctrination into their… movement is the only true path to enlightenment.

SECOND STAGE : Halloween is not just an industry, it’s a passion. Scare season after season home haunters all over the US pour in all of their earnings, blood, sweat and tears and then some into creating frightful attractions for millions of fans. Meet some of LA’s best DIY haunt creators Abby Allen (Nightmare on Main Street), Natalie Klock (Nightmare on Main Street), Albert Reyes (Garden Homes), Diane Meyer (Rotten Apple) and hear them share their haunted dreams and nightmares about frightening friends and fans. Find out what it takes to be the haunter on the block and your screams will never be the same!

Sliders of Ghost Town

MAIN STAGE : Exclusive screening of the acclaimed Sliders of Ghost Town documentary feature presented with a QA with Director Braedon Freeland and special guests: In 1973 the Halloween industry would be changed forever when Knott’s Berry Farm in CA, hosted their very first Halloween Haunt event. Years later, employees of the park known as “Street Monsters” developed a new scare tactic that involved sliding great distances across concrete and asphalt in order to surprise and scare event guests. Since then, sliding has become an all year round activity and can be seen all over the globe. Hear the stories of the monsters who invented or refined this skill into what it is today and see what it takes to be a true Street Monster!

Mind Games: The Dark Side of VR

SECOND STAGE : Can VR help us explore and conquer our fears, or is it a little too real? 

Virtual Reality is a new frontier of entertainment, and many are excited to see what thrills this immersive, 360 medium can provide, especially when applied to horror. However, some experts believe VR is a controversial format for fright blurring the line of real and unreal and causing lasting psychological effects. Panelists Marientina Gotsis, Director at the USC Creative Media & Behavioral Health Center, Erin Reynolds, creator of the bio-feedback horror game Nevermind, and Andrew Goldstein, creator of Otherworld Interactive, will be joined by moderator Julian McCrea (Dr. WhoPortal Entertainment), who premiered the world’s first thriller for the iPad, to explore the light and dark side of VR and the emerging new trend of fully immersive horror in the digital space.

MAIN STAGE : Welcome to the stage CryptTV, Rebekah McKendry (Blumhouse.com), Rodney Ascher (The Nightmare), Kailey Marsh (BloodList), and special guests! Every industry has it’s outliers – those who dare to dream, reimagine, question and push its boundaries. These masterminds have an uncanny knack for foreseeing horror trends and discovering the concepts and creators with maximum scare potential. They have risen to fame by turning nightmares into reality in new and unanticipated ways. Be scared but be in the know – find out what trends will terrorize the masses during Halloween 2016 and beyond!

The Science of Fear

SECOND STAGE : Only at ScareLA. Margee Kerr is a sociologist who studies fear as she travels the world in search of scare-adventures. She has been conducting a scare study in the basement of the most infamous interactive extreme haunt in Pittsburgh, The Scarehouse Basement. Margee will share the most fascinating discoveries and insights she has uncovered while writing her book “SCREAM: Chilling Adventures in the Science of Fear,” named as a must read by the Washington Post.


Margee’s work has been featured in the New York Times, Good Morning America, Parade, Atlantic Monthly, and NPR’s Science Friday. You may have seen her on the National Geographic channel in Map of Hell, A&E‘s Buried Alive, and the History Channel‘s True Monsters.  Signed copies of her book will be available for purchase on the ScareLA showfloor.

MAIN STAGE : HAUNTERS” is a much anticipated documentary release about the creators and operators of some of today’s most controversial interactive horror attractions. What does the increasing demand for “full contact” extreme experiences tells us about society and the psychology of scaring people? And why did family-friendly, traditional haunted houses for Halloween spawn a subculture of ‘full contact’ extreme haunts that blur the line between simulation and true terror? Join producer and director Jon Schnitzer, and stars of the movie – haunters Donald Julson (Nightmare on Loganberry / NOL Khaos) and Russ McKamey (McKamey Manor), haunt designer and Scare School instructor Brooke Walters (Knott’s Scary Farm’s Trick or Treat, Doll Factory, Forevermore) and legendary scare actor Shar Mayer as they talk about some of the craziest trends in haunting and what drives them.

The Dark Rige Project

The Dark Ride Project

SECOND STAGE : Joel Zika is a digital artist who travels the world using 360 degree virtual reality cameras to document the world’s most historic haunted attraction dark rides. He’s flying out from Australia to bring his VR Dark Rides to ScareLA so you can experience it in virtual reality for yourself!

This exclusive panel will be moderated by Todd Robbins the host of Investigation Discovery’s “True Nightmares”, and the star of the haunted off-Broadway hit “Play Dead” (directed by Teller of Pen & Teller). Todd also worked as a glass eater at the world famous Coney Island side show where he became an expert in the history of dark rides.

The Dark Ride Project is capturing the feeling of nostalgia, creativity and folk art ingenuity of these rides for future generations. We’re proud to have this historic panel and cutting edge VR experience is a ScareLA exclusive!

Leigh will also share his thoughts about the unintended consequences of his creations, such as how Saw started off as a mystery-horror film, but took on a life of its own, creating a controversial sub-genre of horror and becoming a shocking, live-action influence for extreme haunts and escape rooms. Leigh will also share his insights and experiences on genres ranging from slasher to supernatural and comedy-horror, as well as live attractions, VR, and haunts. And maybe, if we’re lucky, a sneak peek into his latest project.

Learn and get inspired by their adventures from getting their films made to getting them into festivals and theaters. Whether you’re a horror fan who wants to hear about the behind the scenes of your favorite indie horror films or you’re trying to make your own horror film, this panel is for you!
