Meet some of LA’s best DIY haunt creators Abby Allen (Nightmare on Main Street), Natalie Klock (Nightmare on Main Street), Albert Reyes (Garden Homes), Diane Meyer (Rotten Apple) and hear them share their haunted dreams and nightmares about frightening friends and fans. Find out what it takes to be the haunter on the block and your screams will never be the same!
MAIN STAGE : Exclusive screening of the acclaimed Sliders of Ghost Town documentary feature presented with a QA with Director Braedon Freeland and special guests: In 1973 the Halloween industry would be changed forever when Knott’s Berry Farm in CA, hosted their very first Halloween Haunt event. Years later, employees of the park known as “Street Monsters” developed a new scare tactic that involved sliding great distances across concrete and asphalt in order to surprise and scare event guests. Since then, sliding has become an all year round activity and can be seen all over the globe. Hear the stories of the monsters who invented or refined this skill into what it is today and see what it takes to be a true Street Monster!
SECOND STAGE : Can VR help us explore and conquer our fears, or is it a little too real?
Virtual Reality is a new frontier of entertainment, and many are excited to see what thrills this immersive, 360 medium can provide, especially when applied to horror. However, some experts believe VR is a controversial format for fright blurring the line of real and unreal and causing lasting psychological effects. Panelists Marientina Gotsis, Director at the USC Creative Media & Behavioral Health Center, Erin Reynolds, creator of the bio-feedback horror game Nevermind, and Andrew Goldstein, creator of Otherworld Interactive, will be joined by moderator Julian McCrea (Dr. Who / Portal Entertainment), who premiered the world’s first thriller for the iPad, to explore the light and dark side of VR and the emerging new trend of fully immersive horror in the digital space.

SECOND STAGE : Only at ScareLA. Margee Kerr is a sociologist who studies fear as she travels the world in search of scare-adventures. She has been conducting a scare study in the basement of the most infamous interactive extreme haunt in Pittsburgh, The Scarehouse Basement. Margee will share the most fascinating discoveries and insights she has uncovered while writing her book “SCREAM: Chilling Adventures in the Science of Fear,” named as a must read by the Washington Post.
Margee’s work has been featured in the New York Times, Good Morning America, Parade, Atlantic Monthly, and NPR’s Science Friday. You may have seen her on the National Geographic channel in Map of Hell, A&E‘s Buried Alive, and the History Channel‘s True Monsters. MAIN STAGE : “HAUNTERS” is a much anticipated documentary release about the creators and operators of some of today’s most controversial interactive horror attractions. What does the increasing demand for “full contact” extreme experiences tells us about society and the psychology of scaring people? And why did family-friendly, traditional haunted houses for Halloween spawn a subculture of ‘full contact’ extreme haunts that blur the line between simulation and true terror? Join producer and director Jon Schnitzer, and stars of the movie – haunters Donald Julson (Nightmare on Loganberry / NOL Khaos) and Russ McKamey (McKamey Manor), haunt designer and Scare School instructor Brooke Walters (Knott’s Scary Farm’s Trick or Treat, Doll Factory, Forevermore) and legendary scare actor Shar Mayer as they talk about some of the craziest trends in haunting and what drives them.

Leigh will also share his insights and experiences on genres ranging from slasher to supernatural and comedy-horror, as well as live attractions, VR, and haunts.
