A Scare Student pass is required for access to class programming and all class materials are included in the price, just register for your class and you are good to go. To ensure the best possible experience for you and our educators only a limited number of passes and seats are made available so get your tickets early, they will sell out!

Ken Franklin has been a special effects makeup artist for over 20 years. He has held makeup department head positions at several northern California haunted events and trained makeup teams across the country.  Ken and his wife Bernice run an effects makeup business – FaceFX (facefxmakeup.com) which specializes in providing airbrush equipment and supplies as well as contract makeup services to events, video, and Film. Ken has authored articles on makeup application and efficient makeup room management in magazines such as Hauntworld and Airbrush Techniques. Ken’s resume as a makeup artist also  includes several award winning independent shorts as well as the Troma’s feature, Poultrygeist.

Sliding Clinic: Test Your Sliding Skills

Strap on pads, gloves, sliding shoes and join in on the Halloween craze that is sliding! Taught by a few members of the brigade we welcome anyone from the seasoned slider wanting to learn some new skills and tricks to beginners. The Decayed Brigade will not provide any equipment for anyone wishing to be involved in the clinic, and students are encouraged to bring their own; student equipment will be inspected by a member of the decayed brigade before use. Pads with sliding wax will not be permitted. This clinic will be the only opportunity for Scare LA attendees to slide during the attention and Decayed Brigade reserved the right to remove anyone from the clinic they deem unsafe.

The Decayed Brigade are an elite sliding team consisting of the best sliders from different haunted attractions across Southern California. Formed in 2013, these guys and gals have taken sliding beyond the use of a scare tactic, creating a spectacular demonstration of skill and talent. With over 30+ years of sliding experience, The Decayed Brigade continually push the boundaries of the art of sliding, in pursuit of spreading the sport and entertaining the fans.

In this seminar, we’ll cover assembling a basic tool kit to build Halloween projects. Topics will include: what makes up a basic toolkit, how to select tools that are an excellent value, proper use of instruments, and tool tips and tricks. We’ll go a bit beyond construction basics and talk about some specialty tool kits for projects like soldering and foam work too.

This class will provide practical strategies to help actors create the physical life of a non-human character.  Using some basic choices about the creature as a starting point, actors will come away with tools for building a fully developed monster with its own unique body language.

The Anticipation of Fear examines examples from multiple horror venues and discusses how they use music, viewing angles, and lighting to fuel tense memorable moments. This class will give students a better understanding of how the scare is only as impactful as the set up for it. As Alfred Hitchcock said, “There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.”

Composer, sound designer, and creative director Marc Straight has been a part of the horror industry for over half of his life. Initially working as an actor in haunted attractions, he used his love of horror and passion for music to create dark symphonies with disturbing ambient designs. He has also pushed his limits in the world of video games. Working as a creative designer on seven titles, 6 of which lay close to the horror genre, he seeks to study and apply the driving forces of fear. Hailing from the zombie capital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Marc strives to represent his hometown of horror and be a part of the evolution of all things scary.

Create Compelling Characters

If you’ve ever been given just an egg and expected to make an omelette, this is the class for you.  By focusing on some key questions, it will help actors build a character from a minimal description like “the pirate at the gate”.  Through some physical exercises and improv,  participants will come away with a set of tools for creating the full life of a character.

Learn the art of foam sheet construction and take home a mini-mausoleum! Enroll in Uncle Rog’s offbeat session and learn all about using foam sheets in architectural structures for your haunt. Build crypts, mausoleums, gothic arches, facades, churches and anything else you can imagine, all in a portable way that holds up to weather. While learning these concepts, you will assemble your mini foam mausoleum kit that will demonstrate the use of these ideas. Take it home to use as a reference model for your designs or even as a prop!

Roger Hayes is the creator and driving force behind Hayes Haunt, recipient of the Home Haunter award in 2011 for a Vanguard level walk through haunt. He is also the author of the how-to book “Home Haunting for Mere Mortals”. Roger has a degree in Physics with an emphasis in Computer Science and Engineering, but his first love is art. He works in many mediums including stained glass, painting, and sculpting. Combined with his love of Halloween and attraction to all things dark or quirky, creating Haunted houses became a natural pathway. Unable to quell his twisted imagination he continues to birth creepy works of art and haunted house ideas.

The Escape Room Game: Nuts & Bolts

From the creators of The Cromwell Estate, this class will cover an introduction to escape rooms, industry ideology, principals of gamification, standard tactics, and strategies for maximizing experiences. Specifically, students will leave with an awareness of the current industry, an understanding of core industry values, an understanding of using external vs. internal motivation in puzzle creation, and tactics for improving guest experiences.

Julie Lam is one of the creators of The Cromwell Estate, a new escape room opening in Orange County. She has been an enthusiast of live action gaming since its arrival to Los Angeles. Julie has dedicated countless hours doing research on this industry. Currently, she is working on putting together the finishing touches on the third room of The Cromwell Estate said to open in the fall of 2016.

The Sound of Fear is a focused study in the evolution of sound in film and video games for the horror genre. The class covers in-depth how to use music and sound design to create realism and fear.

Marc Straight is a 26 year old composer from Pittsburgh, PA, that found his love of music very early on in life. At the age of four, he was already learning to play the piano. This would later evolve into the ability to play ten additional instruments; including the guitar, violin and various woodwinds. After high school, Marc went on to study at the Musician’s Institute in California; where he dedicated time and practice into learning how to compose his own music. To date, Marc has worked on various musical projects for himself and others. He currently has released two albums, titled “Create Your Path” and “Garden of Autumn”, as well as creating music and sound effects for games and film. Currently, he is the lead composer and producer behind Tien’s Nightmare; an indie game featuring a spirit named Tien, who must fight off nightmarish creations and restore order to the dream world.

Taught by a few members of the brigade we welcome anyone from the seasoned slider wanting to learn some new skills and tricks to beginners. The Decayed Brigade will not provide any equipment for anyone wishing to be involved in the clinic, and students are encouraged to bring their own; student equipment will be inspected by a member of the decayed brigade before use. Pads with sliding wax will not be permitted. This clinic will be the only opportunity for Scare LA attendees to slide during the attention and Decayed Brigade reserved the right to remove anyone from the clinic they deem unsafe.

This spans from blood rigs to beauty makeup, and every kind of prosthetic appliance in-between. He has provided many of the iconic looks for shock rock musicians such as Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Alice Cooper, as well as pop stars like N’Sync, Missy Elliot, Puff Daddy, and more. Ronnie James Dio wouldn’t work on a movie without Ralis by his side as his personal makeup artist. Ralis regularly works with directors Dean Karr and P. R. A basic talk on making and understanding Pneumatic systems for Haunts. This class will demonstrate what you need to know about air driven props for Home Haunts, Pro Haunts, or Yard Displays. We go over various cylinders, solenoids, air compressors and hook-ups for a typical haunt pneumatic layout. You will leave with a basic knowledge of pneumatics and enough understanding of the various parts to feel comfortable working with and buying pneumatic components.

Preston Meyer is from Rotten Apple 907, a home haunt which started off as child’s birthday party and has grown to become an experience that people look forward to attending each year. Now it is designed and built by all the members of the Meyer family as well as a terrific group of individuals who volunteer their time and building and acting skills. Over the years, the group has dedicated a lot of time and effort to learning how to make our haunt even better, going from a yard display to full home haunt. As a result, each year’s house is more detailed and exciting, and the number of people attending our Haunted House increases. Steve Neill is a special effects makeup artist, filmmaker, puppeteer, model maker and visual effects (VFX) artist in film and television with a career spanning over 35 years. Steve’s plethora of credits include Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Crater Lake Monster (1977), Laser Blast (1978), Ghost Busters (1984), Fright Night (1985), and many other sci-fi/horror films. Steve created, wrote, and produced The Day Time Ended (1978). Steve Neill is currently in production at SNG Studio for “But Something is There” produced by Steve Neill, Paul Gentry, Whitley Strieber and Mary Cacciapaglia. SNG Studio also has an apprenticeship program where Steve is mentoring the next generation of movie-making artist and giving back to an Industry he loves. Don’t waste your hard work; instead, spend the time to craft the experience, time your scares, and give them something to scream about! In this lively session, Roger Hayes will explain how to use fear creatively to move the guests where you want them in the haunt. Attendees will learn how to design their haunt with an artist’s eye. Learn what to expect when dealing with local city officials and Fire Marshals. Learn how to haunt safely, entertain, and bring them back for more.

Roger Hayes is the creator and driving force behind Hayes Haunt, recipient of the Home Haunter award in 2011 for a Vanguard level walk through haunt. He is also the author of the how-to book “Home Haunting for Mere Mortals”. Roger has a degree in Physics with an emphasis in Computer Science and Engineering, but his first love is art. He works in many mediums including stained glass, painting, and sculpting.
